Medications That May Impact DAO Activity

Supporting Clinical Interpretation of the Histamine Clearance Index™
Diamine oxidase (DAO) is the primary enzyme responsible for breaking down exogenous histamine and may be inhibited by certain medications. It is important to document relevant medication use when interpreting the Histamine Clearance Index (HCI).
Decisions regarding whether to discontinue medications prior to testing should be made at the provider’s discretion.
Medications That May Impact Diamine Oxidase (DAO) and /or Histamine1

Histamine Clearance Index
The Histamine Clearance Index is a histamine intolerance test that evaluates the body’s ability to break down and eliminate histamine.
This test helps practitioners assess impaired histamine clearance associated with reduced or inhibited DAO activity, supporting clinical evaluation in patients with multisystem or allergy-like symptoms.
